Itinerary
Day 1 - Montreal, Quebec
The Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel sets the stage for our private champagne reception and welcome dinner. We overnight at the hotel.
Day 2 - Montreal, Quebec / Board the American Orient Express
We embark today on a guided cultural exploration of French colonial Montreal, down the cobblestone streets of the historic district and the Notre Dame Basilica, with its towering spires and azure interior, to the chic shops along Maisonneuve. After lunch at the charming 1769 Auberge du Vieux St. Gabriel 末 North America's first inn 末 we continue to the station and board the American Orient Express, beginning our autumn adventure on the rails.
Day 3 - Quebec City, Quebec
Founded in 1608, Quebec City greets us this morning as we journey with a guide into this historic walled city, with a look and feel of Europe found no where else in North America. Beyond the wall lies Place Royale 末 the birthplace of French civilization in North America 末 and the Plains of Abraham, where the British defeated the French to determine which European power would claim supremacy over colonial North America. This afternoon, we tour spectacular Montmorency Falls, enunciated with autumn's brilliant palette and afternoon tea at Le Chateau Frontenac; or freely explore the Old World flavor of the historic district.
Day 4 - Saratoga Springs, New York
Awaken to the sounds of the tracks beneath the train and the stunning vistas outside your window as we rail through scenic fall countryside en route to upstate New York. Across the border into the United States, Lake Champlain offers us a romantic vision of clear placid waters and a red-and-gold tapestry of leaves as we skirt its shoreline. At Saratoga Springs, we sample the healing waters, then tour the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, where vintage photographs and memorabilia honor the grandest thoroughbred horses and jockeys of all time. Alternatively, browse the quaint shops, boutiques and art galleries along this town's traditional Main Street. Later, en route to the train we pass Albany, an old Dutch settlement along the Hudson River and the capital of New York.
Day 5 - The Berkshires, Massachusetts
The tree-covered Berkshires are breath-taking, and
the beloved American artist Norman Rockwell immortalized the simple natural
beauty and cultural innocence of this region in his illustrations of life
here. We visit the Norman Rockwell Museum as well as Chesterwood, the home
and studio of sculptor Daniel Chester French. In the early afternoon, you
are free to explore Lenox, a quintessential New England town with quaint
Victorian homes and steepled churches 末 a scene reminiscent of days gone
by.
Day 6 - Green Mountains, Vermont
Today we relax aboard the train and ride the rails beside the Champlain Canal into Vermont, through the Green Mountains 末 spiced with valley hamlets, farms and forests 末 and along the Connecticut River. Enjoy the vast panorama of New England's deciduous color from the dome car, attend onboard lectures and join fellow travelers for an afternoon tea presented by our pastry chef. This evening, we arrive in Montpelier, capital city of Vermont.
Day 7 - Shelburne, Vermont
Nestled on the shores of Lake Champlain, the picturesque town of Shelburne sets a romantic stage for our fall tour. This afternoon, we visit Shelburne Farms for lunch and a private tour of the coach barn, a grand Vanderbilt-style stable. Today the 1400-acre estate operates as a dairy farm. Upon returning to Montpelier, relax on board the train, or stop downtown for a tour of the capitol building and a leisurely walk back to the train. Tonight we enjoy our farewell cocktail reception and dinner, then an early morning departure to our final destination.
